About
John Gragg brings music to the people. He knows that we all go searching for music, whether it’s the soothing melodies we crave after a long day at work, those familiar funky riffs that make us tap our feet and bob our heads, or those soulful ballads that remind us that everything will be all right. Music makes our lives better. And sometimes music finds you and gives you a guitar.
It wasn’t unexpected. Music runs in the family. In high school, John’s first cousins, the young Wooten Brothers, moved onto the same street in John’s Newport News, VA neighborhood.
John’s cousins would go on to take the musical world by storm:
- Victor Wooten, an internationally renowned and 5-time Grammy Award Winning bassist,
- Roy Wooten, aka “Futureman”, the 5-time Grammy Award Winning percussionist of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and inventor of the his innovative instrument the “drumitar”,
- Joseph Wooten, a 3-time Grammy nominated keyboardist and long-time member of The Steve Miller Band,
- Rudy Wooten and Regi “The Teacha” Wooten, both musicians whose skill is as well-respected as that of their brothers in the spotlight.
John and the Wooten Brothers spent countless nights (and early mornings) jamming and honing their impressive musical talents. John still spends hours talking theory and technique with Regi Wooten, who has taught guitar and musical theory at Victor Wooten’s eponymous Center for Music and Nature. When music finds you, you follow it for a lifetime.
<span”>John is himself an accomplished guitarist, whose technical skill and passion for the groove have paved the way for performances with some of the most iconic groups of our time, groups like the Persuaders, Millie Jackson, Victor, Joseph, and Regi Wooten, Bo Diddley, Perry Richard, Barbara Lynn, and many others. In John’s music you’ll hear the influences of the artists who have played your favorite songs (and his), artists like Larry Carlton, Eric Clapton, War, The Steve Miller Band, George Benson, Carlos Santana, Jobim, Herbie Hancock, Doobie Brothers, Hall & Oates, Victor and Regi Wooten, to name just a few.
John enjoys bringing his music to the people who want and need music in their lives. He has performed in studios, hotels, restaurants, weddings, wedding receptions, summer festivals, corporate functions and high-end establishments in Virginia, Washington D.C., North Carolina, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Texas, California, and Ohio.
John performs all genres of music from R&B, Classic Rock, Jazz Standards, Smooth Jazz, Funk, Blues, Dance Music and more. He brings a soulful presence to the stage from his years of musical experience.
And because John knows not everyone who needs music can always find it, he volunteers his time performing in local nursing homes, a tradition started years ago when he brought his guitar and the joy of music with him on visits to his own grandmother.
